Vitamin D3 (Vitamin D)

Vitamin D (ergocalciferol-D2, cholecalciferol-D3, alfacalcidol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Consuming the right amount of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus is important for building and maintaining strong bones. Vitamin D is used to treat and prevent bone disorders (e.g., rickets, osteoporosis).
The body produces vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Sunscreen, protective clothing, limited sun exposure, dark skin, and age can prevent you from getting enough vitamin D from sunlight. Vitamin D, along with calcium, can be used to treat or prevent bone loss (osteoporosis). It can be used in kidney disease to keep calcium levels normal and allow for normal bone growth.

Vitamin D is also called the "sunshine vitamin"; the body produces it when UVB rays come into contact with special receptors in the skin. However, the use of sunscreen inhibits this process, leading to mild or severe vitamin D deficiency.

Effect of Vitamin D3 - What is Vitamin D3 good for?

Research suggests that vitamin D3 supplements increase vitamin D levels better than D2 supplements. Vitamin D has many health benefits. Vitamin D has many beneficial effects on health:

-Strengthens bones and muscles
-Boosts immunity
-Improves mood
-Reduces inflammation
-Improves heart function

Vitamin D or D3?

There are two forms of vitamin D supplements:
Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is found naturally in some plants.
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is found naturally in animals and is produced by the skin when exposed to sunlight.
You can meet your vitamin D needs with either form, but we generally recommend vitamin D3 supplements. This is because:
- It raises overall vitamin D levels better than D2.
- It lasts longer in the body than D2.

Vitamin D3 overdose

Vitamin D3 is generally safe, but like many vitamins, it can have toxic effects if taken in excess:

Too much vitamin D can result in the absorption of excessive amounts of calcium. This can lead to a condition called hypercalcemia, which can:
- weaken bones
- interfere with brain and heart function
- cause kidney stones

Some symptoms of vitamin D overdose include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Muscle weakness
- Mood swings
- Pain
- Confusion
- Loss of appetite
- Dehydration
- Excessive urination
- Excessive thirst
