It’s not a nut, and it’s not meant to be cracked open. The name is misleading, because nutmeg is actually the seed of a tropical fruit similar to a peach. That’s why you grate it rather than crack it—for example, over potatoes, lángos and főzelék made with squash. And preferably fresh, because its resinous aroma fades quickly.
